Anxiety and Fear
_Anxiety usually runs in families. A little bit of it is good for
us. It motivates us to work toward favorable outcomes. Experiencing
excessive anxiety is intolerable. It wreaks havoc in our lives, our
thinking is blurred and negative, and we exhibit poor decision making. We
tend to engage in repetitive behaviors that are time consuming in order to appease
the feelings of anxiety. We usually perceive the world and our
environment as unsafe, as if danger lurks around every corner ready to grab us.
Anxiety is a heavy burden not only to the person who suffers from it but also
their families and even society.
The root of this anxiety is that deep down we don’t have the security of feeling totally and unconditionally loved. This emotional pain is triggered and fed with the belief that we are flawed and unlovable. We engage in behaviors that prove to us that these beliefs are true. A toxic cycle is created in which these negative feelings, beliefs and behaviors feed one another and reach a point where we can no longer sustain a ‘normal’ life. Somewhere in our life breakdowns begin to occur, at home, at work, at school. At this moment a choice is often made to seek help.
My work as a therapist is to offer a safe place where we can start the process of self-inquiry. Bringing the light of our awareness into therapy, we can restore an inner sense of safety, self-worth and self-acceptance. If we can afford the journey, financially, emotionally and mentally, we will discover that we ourselves are the love we have been craving all along. Love is not an emotion, it is our true and only essence. We realize that we are indeed lovable, worthy and able to be beacons of happiness, maturity, wisdom and love.
